Singapennae (transl.  The Woman Brave as a Lion) is an Indian Tamil television drama, starring Maneesha Mahesh,Darshak Gowda and Amaljith. It was directed by Dhanush Krishna. The series premiered on 9 October 2023 on Sun TV from Monday to Saturday. It is also available on the digital platform Sun NXT. This series became one of the most watched Tv shows in Tamil Nadu.

Plot

Anandi, a simple yet bold girl, resided with her parents, brother, and sister in the village of Sevarakottai. Their peaceful existence was overshadowed by Suyambulingam, also known as Suyambu, a ruthless loan shark who preyed on the villagers, offering loans against their properties. Tragedy struck when Anandi's brother eloped with his girlfriend, taking away the money intended for their elder sister's wedding, effectively stopping it. When Anandi's father fell into debt and was unable to repay Suyambu, the loan shark made a cruel demand: Anandi's hand in marriage in exchange for her father's freedom. Reluctantly, Anandi agreed to this sacrifice, but the marriage was eventually halted.

Fate intervened when Mahesh arrived in Sevarakottai with his parents and his friend Mithra to perform a marriage ritual at the local temple. Mahesh was instantly captivated by Anandi. Mithra, who harbored a secret love for Mahesh, grew to resent Anandi, especially as Mahesh openly supported her and Anandi helped them complete their ritual.

Later, Anandi moved to Chennai in search of employment to repay her father's debt. Her initial encounter with Anbu led to a misunderstanding, as she mistakenly believed him to be someone who cheated girls. Eventually, Anandi secured a job at Mahesh Garments, unaware that Mahesh was the owner. There, she frequently clashed with Anbu, who also worked at the company.

Anandi soon stumbled upon a clandestine drug operation within the garment factory. Aravind, Mahesh's best friend, was secretly running this illegal business with his elder brother, Thirumoorthy. When Anandi and her friends discovered their illicit activities, Thirumoorthy attempted to eliminate them. Unbeknownst to everyone, Aravind was equally involved. Mahesh, learning of the danger Anandi was in, came to her rescue. This incident prompted him to take on the role of Managing Director at the company, a move that surprised his parents, as he had always shown disinterest in business, preferring foreign travels.

Mithra, realizing the depth of Mahesh's affection for Anandi, consistently insulted and created problems for her. However, Mahesh and Anbu always came to Anandi's aid. In a dramatic turn of events, Mahesh was involved in an accident while saving Anandi, and her subsequent care for him only intensified his love for her.

Meanwhile, Anandi harbored a dislike for Anbu. Anbu sneak into anandhi room in women hostel where anandhi staying and learn her like and problem when she shared with her roommates and through this he send anonymous gifts and letters, signing them "Azhagan," which gradually made Anandi fall in love with this unseen admirer.

During the company's silver jubilee celebration, Mithra orchestrated a plan to defame both Anandi and Aravind, hoping to turn Mahesh against Anandi and break off her supposed engagement with Aravind. However, her scheme backfired. Anandi and Mahesh unknowingly consumed drugged juice and fell unconscious in the same room. Mithra then moved the unconscious Anandi outside. When Anandi regained consciousness in the garden, she returned to the hostel, experiencing severe body pain. Mahesh, unaware of these events, returned home. The following day, Anandi collapsed during an argument with Anbu, who revealed that someone had tried to kill her. Mahesh rushed her to the hospital.

Before assuming his position as MD, Mahesh had observed Anbu's caring nature and befriended him. Together, they successfully proved Anbu's innocence in a false accusation, leading Anandi to clear her misunderstanding of him. Mahesh and Anbu became close confidantes, sharing their love stories with each other, yet neither mentioned Anandi's name. They consistently supported Anandi in overcoming her difficulties.

As Anbu and Anandi spent more time together after their reconciliation, their friendship blossomed. They were later attacked by Aravind seeking revenge, and Anbu was severely beaten, but Mahesh intervened just in time to save them. Nandha then impersonated Azhagan, attempting to marry Anandi. However, Anandi stopped the wedding. Mahesh, realizing Anandi's love for Azhagan, refrained from expressing his own feelings. Despite all this, Anbu still did not reveal his true identity as Azhagan.

Everyone traveled to Anandi's village for a festival. There, Mahesh formed a bond with Manonmani, the hostel warden, who was unknowingly his biological mother, experiencing a sense of maternal affection. Suyambu attempted to harm Anandi by burying her in the sand, but Mahesh and Anbu rescued her. Mahesh was deeply distressed by Anandi's condition. Anbu, witnessing Mahesh's profound love for Anandi, was torn. Ultimately, seeing Mahesh secretly help Anandi repay her family's debt and reclaim their property, Anbu decided to step aside for their happiness. He told Anandi that Azhagan was dead and resolved to go abroad.

Anandi tried to help her friend Gayathri leading anandhi to leave the hostel, so Mahesh bring her to his home. However, his mother refused to let her stay. Consequently, Mahesh took Anandi to Anbu's house, asking her to stay in the same room as Anbu, a fact unknown to Anbu's mother and sister. Mithra, seizing this opportunity, manipulated Mahesh with fabricated evidence, suggesting Anbu was Azhagan and had betrayed him. Hurt and misled, Mahesh did not stop Anbu from leaving the country. However, Anandi discovered Anbu's true identity as Azhagan, and they finally united.

Later, Mahesh discovered Mithra's and his mother's deceitful letter intended to create a rift between him and Anbu. He apologized to Anbu and asked him to rejoin work. Anbu and Anandi concealed their relationship from Mahesh, fearing his reaction, as he deeply trusted Anbu. They eventually told Mahesh that Anandi had forgotten Azhagan, prompting him to decide to confess his feelings to her.

Anbu's mother learned about Anandi staying with Anbu and attempted to harm her, but Anbu saved her and left his house. Feeling guilty, Anandi caused Mahesh to ask Anbu's mother to accept him. His mother then suggested that Anbu marry Thulasi, her brother's daughter, to which Mahesh agreed, assuring Anbu that he would prevent the marriage. He eventually stopped the engagement, expressing that he had always considered Anbu his brother, sharing a heartfelt hug.

Learning that Anandi needed money for her sister's wedding through her father, Mahesh organized a tailoring competition at his garment factory. With the help of Anbu and Mahesh, Anandi won the competition and the prize money, becoming a tailor.

During his birthday party, Mahesh confessed his love to Anandi, stating he felt a connection from a previous birth and had always considered her his wife. Anandi rejected his feelings, saying she saw him as a god. Heartbroken, Mahesh left the party. Anbu, angered by Anandi's rejection of Mahesh, confronted her. In a drunken state, Mahesh created a scene at Anandi's hostel, pouring his heart out to Anbu, unaware of Anandi's love for him.

Anandi's hostel warden, Mahesh's biological mother (though he didn't know it), and Mahesh went to Anandi's village, seeking her parents' approval, as Mahesh believed Anandi's hesitation was due to their differing social status. Parvathi, furious at this, asked Mahesh to leave their house, and he did. Everyone worried about him, but he called Anbu, asking him to meet him alone at the beach. He confided in Anbu about his issues with his mother and his desire to establish his own identity so that Anandi would love him. He stayed in a small hotel with Anbu's assistance. Anandi felt guilty for Mahesh's struggles.

Anbu, deeply respecting Mahesh and considering him a brother, was pained by his suffering and felt responsible due to Mahesh's unwavering trust in him. Anandi helped Anbu's mother recover from her health problems, leading her to accept Anandi wholeheartedly. Mahesh stood by Anbu during this difficult time, even paying for his mother's treatment.

Eventually, the warden learned about Anbu and Anandi's love and accompanied them to Anandi's village. Mahesh intercepted them midway and, upon discovering their relationship, became enraged at Anbu for his perceived betrayal. He even injured himself by breaking his head on his car window and fought with Anbu despite his pleas. His parents brought him home that night. He also lashed out at the warden, destroying things in the hostel but stopped upon seeing Anandi, expressing his love and his inability to accept Anbu's betrayal. Aravind then took Mahesh home.

Anandi met her brother in Chennai, who approved of her love for Anbu and offered his support. Anbu and Anandi tried to regain Mahesh's trust, but Anbu's mother was unhappy with their efforts. Mithra urged Mahesh to fire Anandi and Anbu from the garment factory, but Mahesh refused to let his personal life affect his professional decisions, admitting that he could neither forgive Anbu nor forget Anandi.

Aravind and Mithra framed Anbu for assaulting Karunakaran, trying to permanently sever the bond between Anbu and Mahesh. Mahesh, believing Anbu was instigating the workers against the company, hit him but left him after Anandi fainted. Aravind, realizing Mithra's love for Mahesh, saw the conflict between Mahesh and Anbu as an opportunity to eliminate Mahesh, hoping to inherit the company and continue his illegal business with his brother. He stabbed Mahesh, but Anbu intervened and saved him. However, they manipulated Mahesh into believing Anbu had tried to kill him, leading to Anbu's arrest.

Anandi went to the hospital to see Mahesh and witnessed Aravind's brother attempting to kill him again. She saved Mahesh, and they successfully proved Anbu's innocence. Mahesh realized his mistake and apologized to the warden and Anbu for his harsh behavior. He confided in the warden that he didn't know if he could ever forget Anandi, calling her a mother figure and breaking down. Mahesh also personally apologized to Anandi, promising his continued support and his intention to move on.

Now, Anandi was pregnant, a secret she kept to herself. Experiencing frequent dizziness, she went to a hospital and was shocked to learn about her pregnancy. Refusing to believe it, she created a commotion and left. Seeking a second opinion, another hospital confirmed her pregnancy. She started avoiding Anbu, who was unable to understand her changed behavior. Heartbroken and distraught, Anandi walked alone in the rain and fell into a drainage. Mahesh found her and rushed her to the hospital. The doctor informed them that Anandi was weak and needed a healthy diet. Mahesh, furious at Anbu, warned him to take care of Anandi. He prioritized Anandi's happiness, stepping back from their love but promising to always be there for her in any trouble, urging Anbu to discover and resolve Anandi's problem. He also instructed his father to provide free, nutritious food for the company workers, considering Anandi's condition.

Mithra gets approval from parvathi for marrying mahesh even though thillai is not happy with this and mahesh unaware of it.She also learns about anandhi pregnancy and try to make anandhi marry anbu quickly as she believes mahesh is the reason for pregnancy and she only knows the truth.Anandi's parents arrived in Chennai to invite everyone to Kokila's wedding. Her father expressed his wish for Mahesh to be his son-in-law. Upon learning this, Mahesh decided to reveal the truth, stating that Anandi did not want this marriage and her parents also convinced but when he attempted to disclose Anbu and Anandi's love to gain their approval but was stopped by Anandi and the warden, as he had already lashed out at Anandi's brother, vehemently denying his daughter's love for anyone.

Anandi, in despair, contemplated suicide but wanted to spend some final moments with her loved ones. Her parents, Anbu, and her friends accompanied her to a park and a beach, where they shared precious time together.Anbu ask mahesh to join them but mahesh refuses saying anandhi and her parents will feel awkward if he come there and he feels that the pain is more even now when he try to forget anandhi.Afterward, Anandi walked towards the sea, intending to end her life ,her friend regina sees her and shouts leading anbu to save her and anandhi lies to everyone that she fled away by waves but her friends confront her in their hostel and learns that she is pregnant.

Will Anandi uncover the true culprits behind the conspiracies? Will she overcome the obstacles set by Mithra and Aravind? Whom will she ultimately marry – Anbu, the man she loves, or Mahesh, who loves her deeply and selflessly? And amidst all the chaos, will the strong brotherly bond between Anbu and Mahesh endure? The answers to these questions form the rest of their story.

Production

Development

On July end 2023, Sun TV confirmed that it would distribute the new Tamil serial, to be produced by Miracle Media. The series shoot began in August 2023 and the first promo was released on 18 September 2023. The show is directed by Dhanush Krishna.

Casting

Newcomer actress Maneesha Mahesh was cast as the female lead Anandhi, Darshak gowda plays the male lead alongside her, marking his return after 'Arunthathi' . Amaljith was cast as the second male lead role, marking his return after 'Amman' . Actress Rama play of the role of Pechiyamma.

In October 2023, VJ Bavithra was cast as Mithira (Main Antogonist). In November 2023, Rekha Angelina was cast as Manimegalai.

Release

The first promo was released on 18 September 2023 featuring Maneesha Mahesh and Rama. The second promo was unveiled on 30 September 2023, and the third promo was unveiled on 2 October 2023, featuring Maneesha Mahesh tell the story and revealing the release date.

The show started airing on Sun TV on 9 October 2023, replacing Vanathai Pola. This series was launched along with Zee Tamil's series Nala Damayanthi and Sandhya Raagam.

Singapennae became one of the most watched Tamil television programs in 2023.The show got a TVR of 10.28 on launching week on 9 October 2023. On its launch week it became the Top 5 serial of Sun TV.

In January 2024, the series was the first most watched Tamil-language television series with 11.88 TVR

Adaptations

Since February 2024, Singapennae has been remade in other languages such as in Kannada, Telugu and Malayalam. It is broadcast on Sun TV Network's group of channels in the respective languages.
