The New Path (YY; Turkish: Yeni Yol) is a political party founded on January 10, 2025, by the Felicity Party (Saadet Partisi), the Future Party (Gelecek Partisi), and the Democracy and Progress Party (DEVA Partisi) to establish a joint parliamentary group. The party's chairman is Celal Mümtaz Akıncı, a former member of the Constitutional Court. In the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM), it has a total of 30 deputies—25 under its own structure and 5 from the founding parties. With this number, it constitutes the fifth-largest group in the parliament.
Although New Path is officially a political party, it primarily serves as a parliamentary group uniting Saadet, Gelecek, and DEVA, which have different political views. These parties maintain their unique political identities, ideologies, and programs while cooperating on common issues. This structure aims to create a more effective opposition bloc, exert greater influence on parliamentary decision-making processes, and better represent various social segments.
Legal Structure and Naming
[edit]In order to form a parliamentary group in the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM), a political party must have at least 20 deputies. Parties with a parliamentary group have certain advantages in legislative activities compared to those without one. New Path (Yeni Yol) was established as a parliamentary group by three different political parties that wanted to benefit from these advantages but did not meet the required conditions. However, since Turkish law does not provide a legal framework for such a structure, it had to be officially registered as a political party.
Although inter-party alliances are possible in Turkey, their function is generally limited to surpassing the electoral threshold. As a result, New Path was officially founded as a political party, despite primarily serving as a parliamentary group.
In the records of the Court of Cassation, the entity is listed as "Yeni Yol", while in TBMM records, it appears as "Yeni Yol Party". However, since its founders consider it a parliamentary group rather than a political party, it is commonly referred to as the "New Path Group" or simply "New Path".
History
[edit]Background
[edit]2023 General Elections and Joint List Negotiations
[edit]Changes in the election system before the 2023 elections made it more difficult for smaller parties to win parliamentary seats, even under an alliance framework. In response, Temel Karamollaoğlu, leader of the Felicity Party (Saadet Partisi), proposed forming a joint candidate list with the Future Party (Gelecek Partisi) and the Democracy and Progress Party (DEVA Partisi). However, DEVA refused to enter the elections under Saadet’s candidate list, preventing the formation of a three-party alliance.
Instead, Saadet, Gelecek, and DEVA participated in the elections under the Republican People's Party (CHP) list. As a result, Saadet and Gelecek each won 10 parliamentary seats, while DEVA secured 15 seats.
Joint Parliamentary Group Negotiations
[edit]Following the elections, Saadet, Gelecek, and DEVA initiated discussions to establish a parliamentary group in the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM). They debated whether to operate under Saadet’s structure or form a new party to facilitate their collaboration. However, DEVA distanced itself from the proposed models and withdrew from the negotiations, leaving Saadet and Gelecek to continue the process alone.
Formation and Challenges of the Saadet-Gelecek Group
[edit]On July 6, 2023, Saadet and Gelecek officially established a joint parliamentary group and began operations in TBMM. Their first group meeting was held on July 12, 2023. The group actively participated in parliamentary affairs, proposing general discussions, law proposals, and parliamentary inquiries. Weekly meetings were held to determine common policies and ensure active participation from group members.
However, the group faced instability when Saadet MP Hasan Bitmez passed away, causing it to fall below the required 20-MP threshold. The group was temporarily restored when CHP MP Ali Fazıl Kasap joined Saadet. Nonetheless, the group dissolved again when Gelecek MP Nedim Yamalı resigned.
Establishment of New Path (Yeni Yol)
[edit]Determined to maintain a strong opposition presence in TBMM, Saadet renewed discussions with DEVA. As a result, two DEVA MPs joined Saadet, allowing them to re-establish their parliamentary group. However, they continued seeking a long-term solution.
After further negotiations between Saadet, Gelecek, and DEVA, they officially founded New Path (Yeni Yol) on January 10, 2025. The new party was designed to function as a parliamentary group without dissolving the founding parties’ legal identities. Some MPs remained within their original parties, while others formally joined New Path.
Through this new political structure, New Path aims to establish an alternative opposition bloc within Turkey’s political landscape.
