Ne Zha 2 (simplified Chinese: 哪吒之魔童闹海; traditional Chinese: 哪吒之魔童鬧海; pinyin: Nézhā zhī Mótóng Nàohǎi; also simply 哪吒2; Nézhā Èr[1]), also spelled Nezha 2, is a 2025 Chinese animated film. It is the direct sequel to the 2019 film Ne Zha and the third film in the Fengshen franchise following the 2020 film Jiang Ziya; the series is loosely based on the novel Investiture of the Gods.[2] It was released on 29 January 2025 (Chinese New Year).[3]
Plot
[edit]Nezha and Ao Bing must respond to dangerous sea monsters.[4]
Reception
[edit]The film broke the record for the highest single-day gross of a Chinese animated film.[1][5] By the morning of the day after its release, its gross had surpassed 700 million RMB.[1]
Online ratings on release day were positive: the film had an average rating of 9.7 out of 10 on Maoyan and 9.8 out of 10 on Taopiaopiao.[5]
A review in the Shanghai Observer noted the film's popularity upon release and described it as a successful continuation of the franchise, but also commented that some elements were predictable and that the emotional impact of characters' family members' deaths felt forced.[6]
